Media Literacy Week 2016

Starting today, teachers and students are taking part in Media Literacy Week. The 11th annual Media Literacy Week kicked off this morning in Ottawa with students from across Canada coming together to learn new digital media production skills. The event, held at the Canadian Museum of Nature, was hosted by MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF), with opening comments by the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women.

Media Literacy Week is an annual event that takes place every November. Co-led by MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF), the week puts a spotlight on the importance of digital and media literacy as key components in the education of children and young people.

Working with Canadian schools, libraries, and educational associations and organizations, MediaSmarts and CTF seek to inspire a leap in Canadians’ thinking towards media education as an important – and innovative – approach for creating thoughtful, engaged and informed young people.

This initiative provides Canadians with a focal point for media-related activities and, at the same time, showcases the creative ways that digital and media literacy are being integrated into classrooms and communities across the country.
